What is Mappr?

We have put together a quick intro video, explaining what Mappr is and a bit about our Group concept:

Mappr shows you the most interesting places around you. It’s based on the idea that you and your friends’ activity on Foursquare and other location-based services says a lot about the world around us. The more you and your friends are checking into places and leaving tips, the better we can surface interesting places you might not know about.

Our iPhone app lets you see Foursquare places on the map, prioritized in a way that reduces clutter and surfaces the best in any map view. Zoom out to see the top places in the whole city, zoom in to see everything right around you. Filter on category to find exactly what you are interested in.

Adding something new to your check-ins

When you check in with Mappr, you still check in with Foursquare (assuming you have hooked up your account!), so you will still earn your badges and hold down your mayorships. But unique to Mappr, with any check-in, you can check in with a group.

But with Mappr, whenever you check in, you can also add a group to the check-in. We’ve got groups for all kinds of interests, from sports to food, fishing to rock climbing. And you can create your own groups based on whatever it is that you are interested in.

With these group check-ins, we’ve got one more great piece of info to help find the best places around. Use the group filter to find places with group check-ins, where other people have tagged places for that group.

All of these great places can be found on our website as well. It’s perfect to quickly see the hottest places around, and as we get to know you (algorithmically at least!), it won’t be just the hot places, but the places that are interesting for you.

How can I use Mappr?

Download the iPhone app here. The website is http://map.pr.!

We are working to support Facebook, with check-ins and seeing your friends. But for now, you can post your check-ins to Facebook or Twitter.

Why does it not do x? Can you do y?

We are aware of the limitations currently! We really wanted to get it out to you quick, and hear back on what you like and hate. So apologies for anything that is off, or completely borked. We would love to hear anything, you can submit feedback here, or mail us at feedback AT map.pr!

Hi, I have a question. What period is covered by the data in Map.pr? Is it a year old, a month old?

    Hi Adrian,

We are updating the data from Foursquare on a regular basis, based on usage and popularity. Any given place may have data that is somewhat old. But as soon as you go into that page (or open up the map bubble on the internet site), we refresh that data.

Sometimes you will even see the number of checkins change in front of you. So in short, if you look at a particular place, it should have current stats on number of checkins.

Of course, unless Foursquare is down ;-)
